Physical and Chemical Data, Burton Island Expedition 28 February-15 April 1968 and STYX Expedition 4 April-4 August 1968.
Abstract
The purpose of the Burton Island's work was to measure the characteristics of the deep waters of the huge central basin of the South Pacific with emphasis on the western edge where the SCORPIO Expedition has found evidence of a western boundary current. The general objectives of the first five legs of the STYX Expedition were to measure water characteristics, currents and sediments in relation to sea-floor structure in critical areas of the central Pacific Ocean and to study the shallower layers of the tropical ocean by measuring fallout radiocesium CS137.
