The Significance of Material Ductility to the Reliability and Load Carrying Capacity of Peak Performance Structures.

Abstract

The fracture ductilities are determined as a function of stress state for 2024- T4 Al, 7075-T6 Al, Ti-6Al-6V-2Sn (ann) Ti-2.5Al-16V (solution treated), AISI 4340 (R sub c=39, 53) and 250 grade maraging steel (48 R sub c). The studies concluded to date indicate that it is possible to achieve the objectives of developing design criteria against fracture on the basis of readily determinable material parameters. A discussion is given on the definition of the stress-strain relation exponent, n, in this context. The proposed analysis was applied to Al 2014-T6.
