Spark Chamber Spectrometry and Space Radiation Studies. II.
Abstract
Described in the report is a data acquisition system for a spark-chamber spectrometer, which consists of a unidirectional spark-chamber range telescope with differential pulse-height analysis of the specific energy loss of a charged particle that passes through the triggering telescope. Also described are the concept, design, construction, and performance of pulsed spark-discharge modules; The performance characteristics of a high-voltage pulse generator; a further study on the interpretation of previous measurements of the fluctuations in the energy loss of 66 and 100 MeV protons in a thin proportional counter; some representative experiments that would utilize spark chamber instrument systems for the measurement of charged particle spectra in and/or above the atmosphere; and the results of two studies on visual sensations induced in the dark-adapted eye by heavy cosmic-ray nuclei.
