Research Directed Toward the Observation and Interpretation of Solar Phenomena.

Abstract

The first section summarizes the theoretical studies carried out on sunspot models, cosmic electrodynamics, and atomic theory. The second section describes coronal studies at eclipse, supported in part by this contract but primarily from other sources. The third section reviews a study of some statistical properties of sunspot cycles, with emphasis on their variation from cycle to cycle, with evidence for long-period fluctuation in solar activity which is not confined to the usual indices of spottedness. The concluding section is concerned primarily with long-term solar variations and climate history, including some research directed toward fuller identification of the climate fluctuations of the past century.
