Turf (Peat) Hummocks of Kamchatka,

Abstract

On the basis of a study of the actual turf and turf-mineral hummocks of Northern Kamchatka, one can form the following conclusions: The actual turf and turf-mineral hummocks with permanently frozen soils on Northern Kamchatka have a wide distribution; The largest turf-mineral hummocks occur on the Kamchatka Isthmus where their height reaches 5 m, with a base diameter of 20 m. Farther south, the hummocks have smaller sizes. Hummocks in both groups are noted in the depressed relief forms with a level swampy surface covered with a fairly thick turf-mossy cover. (Author)
