Strains in Concrete Cylinders Molded Horizontally and Loaded Vertically,

Abstract

Tests were performed to investigate the adequacy of specimens used in creep tests as such tests are conducted at the Concrete Division of the Waterways Experiment Station. The specimens are molded horizontally and loaded vertically; hence there was a question as to essential equality of strains measured on opposite sides. Two sets of specimens, half of which were molded horizontally and half vertically, were made and tested. A strain meter was embedded along the axis of each specimen during fabrication, and strain gages were mounted on opposite sides after curing. The specimens were loaded several times to 0.4 of the estimated strength of the concrete.
