Whisker Reinforcement of Piezoelectric Transducer Ceramic for Naval Applications.

Abstract

The introduction of sapphire whisker reinforcement to Type I, II, and III piezoelectric ceramic compositions has resulted in dynamic strength increases up to 500% of nonreinforced counterparts. Attendant benefits include improved aging characteristics, reduced dielectric losses, increased dielectric strength, and improved large signal piezoelectric properties and performance. Gamma radiation of nonreinforced materials produced up to 30% increases in dynamic strength while degrading strength of reinforced counterparts. (Author)
