Mathematical Research in Signal and Image Processing.

Abstract

The report describes research results in three areas of current interest in the general field of mathematics for signal and image processing. The first of these is the area of fast correlation and convolution using Walsh functions. Improvements are presented to an existing algorithm for fast correlation of signals and it is shown how the results apply to convolution as well. Details are presented for the adaptation of both operations to two-dimensional data. The new techniques offer promise for image enhancement and template matching. The second area is that of the logical Walsh transform, which previously showed promise for application to binary images. A detailed analysis reveals that the transform loses its simplicity when applied to signals of longer length and, for length 16 signals, the transform reversibility breaks down. The final area is pattern preconditioning for acoustic signals. (Author)
