Ray Tracing with Non-Linear Profiles.

Abstract

In the report, the derivation of the general form of the acoustic ray paths for various non-linear profiles is developed. The most useful of these paths, the ellipse and hyperbola, are derived in a form suitable for use with sound velocity profiles encountered in the ocean. Expressions for travel time, initial angle, and spreading loss were also determined for the ellipse and hyperbola. Represented analytically was a typical sound velocity profile from the Straits of Florida which yeilds an ellipse for the upper region and a hyperbola for the lower region with the slope of the two curves constrained to be equal at the junction point.
