Low Temperature Electrochemical System.

Abstract

Studies have been carried out on the factors influencing low temperature operation of air electrodes in metal-air batteries (such as zinc-air). Using a typical Teflon-bonded platinum black electrode structure, the pertinent parameters which describe the temperature dependence of the electrochemical and transport processes have been determined in 31% KOH electrolyte. The temperature could lead to problems in low temperature operation of zinc-air cells. Comparisons of the low temperature operation of different air electrode materials have revealed a distinct dependence of the transport-limited current on electrode structure, indicating a possible approach to improved low temperature operation of air electrodes via modifications in air electrode structure.
