Solving the Biharmonic Equation in a Square: A Direct Versus a Semidirect Method.
Abstract
A direct method is compared with an iterative coupled equation approach for solving the biharmonic difference equation in a square. If there are N sup 2 unknowns, then the direct method requires (C sub 1)(N sup 3) operations compared to (C sub 2)(N sup 5/2) operations for the iterative approach with optimal relaxation, where C sub 1 and C sub 2 are constants.
