Reversibility of Cellular Injury Due to Inadequate Tissue Perfusion.

Abstract

The conference and the workshop of the 'Reversibility of Cellular Injury due to Inadequate Perfusion' was held in Miami, Florida, May 10-12, 1972. The newer aspects of cellular interrelationship, internal environment and particularly water exchange were discussed. The peculiarities, as revealed by the ultrastructural studies, of attachment support and the integrity of cellular systems were described and discussed. The highlight of the session consisted of consideration of the state of water within cells and in the interstitial tissue. It was stated that in the conventional membrane theory, cells are envisaged as sacs of protein-salt solution enclosed in a lipo-protein membrane with pores. Activities of pumps located in the cell membrane determine the distribution of solutes between the cell and its external environment. It has been shown that the total energy required for the pumps far exceeds the energy available to a resting cell.
