Optical Investigation of the Electronic Structure of Binary Alloys: Noble Metal-Noble Metal Alloys.

Abstract

The report summarizes the results of optical investigations obtained on a series of Au-Cu alloy films. Emphasis is given to problems relating to the preparation and characterization of these films in disordered and ordered phases. In particular, the importance of heat treatments by simultaneous resistance measurements and of adjusting both the temperature and kinetics of annealing and quenching cycles is demonstrated. Interpretation of the observed optical properties of the disordered alloys is given according to recently propsoed theories based on a coherent potential approximation. Finally, property changes are related to phase transformatoins. (Author)
