Strains and Displacements on a Steel Wire Strand,

Abstract

There is a great industrial interest in the knowledge of the load transfer and the stress distribution in assembled wires making strands and in assembled strands making wire-ropes. The part of a large program that is reported in the paper deals with a 7-wire steel strand (six helical wires and a core) that is loaded axially, (with ends free to rotate and independently, with ends restricted from rotation) and in bending. Strains were determined using brittle coatings and electrical resistance strain gages and are compared with the results of a theoretical analysis previously published. The non-linear character of the phenomenon is emphasized. (Author)
