Aryleneperfluoroalkylene-Modified Polysiloxanes.

Abstract

Synthesis of alpha, omega-bis-(m-(hydroxydimethylsilyl)phenyl)perfluoroalkanes, where the perfluoroalkylene group is -(CF2)2- or -(CF2)3- are described. Polycondensations catalysed by hexylammonium 2-ethylhexanoate give the corresponding high molecular weight polysiloxanes. These polymers are elastomeric and more thermally stable than polydimethylsiloxane on a weight-loss basis. A vulcanisate of the polymer with -(CF2)3- units is stronger than a conventional methyl silicone rubber vulcanisate, but its hot-wet stability needs to be improved. Possible modifications to reduce the glass transition temperature and help in vulcanisation are discussed. (Author)
