Gain Saturation in a Laser Amplifier Driven by a CW Oscillator.

Abstract

A model is given for a cw oscillator driving an amplifier whose upper excited level is pumped instantaneously, continuously, or both. Although simple, this model includes the nonlinear effect of gain saturation. Closed-form solutions for the intensity are obtained for all times including an initial transient period. When initial pumping occurs, first derivatives are discontinuous across a characteristic emanating from the origin. Examples are presented that illustrate the dominant effect of gain saturation.
