Measurement of the Self-Absorption of a Plasma Confined in a Tube.

Abstract

An experimental arrangement for the determination of the local coefficient of absorption of a rotationally symmetric plasma column located centrally in a transparent cylinder is described. A beam of radiation emitted from the central zone of the plasma is used for the measurement of the transmission factor of the plasma in the envelope as a function of the distance of the probing ray from the axis of the column. The scanning system which is readily adaptable to various tube parameters is assembled from commercially available components. Relations are given connecting the object (plasma) and image (confined plasma) distributions of the transmission factor. (Author)
