Two Cases of Congenital Coloboma of the Optic Disc,

Abstract

Coloboma of the optic nerve head is a rare anomaly resulting from disturbance by fusion of the optic cleft. It thus belongs to the so-called typical colobomas. This anomaly may be present as a single anomaly or associated with other anomalies elsewhere of the eye structures, especially of the fundus. The two cases reported in this paper are young males with the cheif complaints of defect of vision in one of their eyes since birth. Both cases revealed ophthalmoscopically total or partial absence of optic nerve heads associated with malarrangement of retinal vasculatures. One of the cases was also associated with congenital leucoma of the cornea of the affected eye. According to Casper's classification, the vascular arrangement of these two cases belong to the third group. Various examinations have been performed. One of the cases shows significant difference in size of optic canals, with the small one belonging to the affected eye. Chromosomal study reveals no abnormal figures. Systemic examinations give no special suggestions. (Author)
