Numerical Experiments with Several Time Differencing Schemes with a Barotropic Primitive Equation Model on a Spherical Grid.

Abstract

Four time differencing schemes were tested using a barotropic primitive equation model on a spherical staggered grid with an analytic input in order to compare amplitudes, phase speeds, and computation time for each. The methods tested were the leapfrog, Euler-backward, leapfrog-trapezoidal, and Adams-Bashford. One set of experiments was performed using an averaging technique to reduce the effects of gravity waves in the higher latitudes. Another set was performed without the averaging in order to determine the effects of this technique on the solutions. (Author)
