Brucite Formation in Carbonate Rock Prisms,

Abstract

As part of its investigative work on reactions that may occur when carbonate rocks are used as aggregates in concrete, the Concrete Division, U. S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station, has made length-change tests of many different carbonate rock specimens stored in 1-N sodium hydroxide solutions. After three or more years of storage in the same solutions, and X-ray examination of several small rock prisms was made to investigate possible changes in composition at progressively greater depths beneath the outer surfaces. Results are discussed.
