Differential Thermal Analysis of Lead Azide in Various Gaseous Atmospheres.

Abstract

Lead azide was analyzed in gaseous atmospheres by means of Differential thermal analysis. The critical weights and temperatures of lead azide exothermic peaks were distinctly altered by atmospheres containing water vapor and to a lesser extent by an atmosphere of pure oxygen. The exothermic peaks at higher temperatures (above 333C) are deduced to be due to the decomposition of basic lead azide. This is a compound of lead azide and lead oxide of PbN6 : PbO of at least two molar ratios. It is produced by heating lead azide in the presence of water vapor or pure oxygen. The addition of Al or Cu to the lead azide were studied.
