Polyurethane-Coated Nylon Pendants for Marine Use.

Abstract

Two sizes of urethane-coated nylon pendants are fabricated and tested. The larger size pendant is 9-inch circumference and 100 feet long with eyes spliced in each end. The smaller size pendant is 6-inch circumference and 80 feet long with eyes spliced in each end. The nylon portion of the pendants consists of 2-in. 1 braided nylon rope. The pendants are intended for use in multileg moorings for tankers as the connecting link between an explosively embedded anchor and a mooring buoy. The pendants' function is to provide elasticity or stretch in each mooring leg so that the mooring can accomodate the motions of the moored tankers, preventing excessive mooring loads on the embedded anchors. The polyurethane coating on the pendants protects the nylon rope both in storage and in service. The pendants were subjected to laboratory tensile tests, Army XM-50 and XM-200 explosive embedment anchor firing and pulling tests, tensile cycling and sand abrasion test, water immersion and tensile test, and open storage tests.
