A Sequential Nonparametric Test for Symmetry with Applications to Process Control.

Abstract

The problem to be considered in ths dissertation is one of testing that a sequence of observations has a distribution that is symmetric about a specified value. The authors considers testing for symmetry in traditional hypothesis testing problems and also in a problem in process control where it is desired to detect when the mean of a sequence of observations changes from a specified value. The procedures to be used are sequential nonparametric procedures based on a signed sequential rank statistic originally developed by Parent (1956). (Author)
