Transient Response of a Mass Spectrometer with a Brink Ionizer.

Abstract

A study has been made of the performance of a Brink ionizer which is part of a mass spectrometer in a molecular-beam apparatus. It has been shown that the potentials applied to the exit apperature plate have a pronounced effect on which regions of the ionizer contribute the bulk of the selected ions passed through the mass filter. The properly adjusted instrument has been used to observe the scattering of a 2.2 eV Ar beam from various target gases and from a solid surface. Some time-resolved details of these processes have been compared with theory. (Author)
