Evaluation of Compatible Titanium Alloys in Boron Filament Composites.

Abstract

Mechanical and physical properties of the two candidate titanium alloys, Ti 1310 and Ti 223 (Ti-13V-10Mo-5Zr-2.5Al and Ti-22V-3W-5Zr-2.5Al) were determined, and Ti 1310 was selected for further work. The alloy has good ductility, a room-temperature strength of 130,000 psi increasing to 160,000 psi after heat treatment, and high proportional limits desirable for boron composites. Elevated-temperature properties are adequate for composite usage. Short-length composite tape specimens were roll bonded and showed feasibility for fabrication of continuous Ti 1310/B tape with properties exceeding target data. Press bonding of high volume composite sheets was readily accomplished but strength was below target for reasons not yet determined at the time of writing. Scaleup from experimental buttons to a 30-pound ingot was successfully demonstrated by a commercial producer. Reports from the rolling mill indicate excellent ductility in cold rolling of foil.
