Digital Address Thin Display Tube.

Abstract

The report describes the work carried out during a two-year research and development contract to develop a feasibility-model 32x52 resolution-element thin-display tube (the DIGISPLAY) for a man-pack radar. The design and fabrication of an initial bell-jar DIGISPLAY is described in detail. The measured performance of this first display was good. It operated at a brightness of 100 foot-Lamberts, a minimum contrast-ratio of 10:1, and required a total input-power of 3 watts, including electronics. Only one of its 1664 resolution elements was defective. A second display was developed for packaging in a thin glass envelope. It was designed using a flatter area-cathode and thinner switching plates than the ones used in the bell-jar display. Several flat display-tubes were fabricated and tested. (Author)
