Noise Generating Mechanisms in Avalanche Transit-Time and Transferred-Electron Oscillators and Amplifiers.

Abstract

A model for the AM and FM noise in an avalanche transit-time (ATT) diode oscillator is developed. From the model, the AM and FM noise spectra are computed for a series of operating points. Three circuit models, optimum, parallel resonant RLC and a coaxial cavity tuned by slugs, are considered so that noise inherent to the diode can be separated from circuit effects. Results of these computations are described. Three types of waveguide resonant circuits fabricated for use with X-band (i.e., 8.2 GHz to 12.4 GHz) transferred-electron devices are described.
