Plasma Heating near the Ion Cyclotron Frequency and Its Harmonics.

Abstract

Additions have been made to the theory of the Quasi Ion Bernstein modes which propagate for wave frequencies near the harmonics of the ion cyclotron frequency, and experience ion cyclotron damping as the harmonic resonances are approached. The effects of collisions and electron Landau damping have been included, and group velocity calculations have been performed. When the effects of collisions are included, the theory predicts strong collisional damping in high density, low temperature collision dominated plasmas, whereas the original theory predicted wave propagation in the absence of collisions.
