An Analysis of Winds Derived from Upwind Rawinsonde Releases.

Abstract

Rawinsonde balloons were tracked simultaneously by GMD-1 equipment from the release site and from a site 58 miles downwind. The derived winds are analyzed for three sequential soundings. The results show that the upwind release method (downwind tracking) provides mesoscale winds aloft under conditions prohibitive to conventional tracking methods. Tracking errors for both release methods are analyzed. Large-scale bias errors caused by anomalous propagation appear in the conventional tracking data and produce erroneous wind oscillations which are repeatable in sequential soundings. An analysis of the random error component shows a critical elevation tracking angle of 10 degrees for conventional observations and 9 degrees for the upwind release method. (Author)
