The Economics of Managing Special Tooling and Special Test Equipment

Abstract

A specialized as well as costly task of the Air Force has been its use of special tooling and special test equipment (ST/STE). Basic to the effective management of ST/STE is the ability to accurately establish its value. The thesis presents an indepth analysis of the costs and benefits of retaining ST/STE for the F-100 and F-105 defense systems during the FY 69 - FY 71 time period. In order to assess the value of ST/STE, both fiscal and non-fiscal elements were included in the study. In addition, the importance of utilizing an automated system as a management tool was examined.
