Investigation of an Unbonded Contact Problem.

Abstract

The problem of an unbonded contact between a thick beam and a semi-infinite plate is investigated. It is an extension of Yoon's previous work in which he successfully applied an optimization technicque to find the contact length and the distribution of the contact stress of the same problem, but he did not take into account the effect of Poisson's ratio and the span/height ratio of the beam. In the present work, the effect of the two parameters on the contact length and the contact stress is carefully investigated using a thick beam theory. The results of the refined analysis indicate that, although the contact length is virtually unaffected by the use of the thick beam theory, there is a significant change in the distribution of the contact stresses as compared to Yoon's results. As it has been observed by the previous investigators, the contact length is found to remain independent of the magnitude of the load applied on the beam. (Author)
