A Fortran Program for an Exact Test of Independence in an M X N Contigency Table

Abstract

General m x n contingency tables are discussed along with relationships common to all such tables. The background for various probability models is presented as well as the theory for a general conditional test. The general test is then applied specifically to the probability model selected followed by a numerical example. A brief history of past efforts in computing the exact test is provided. Finally, the major portions of the FORTRAN program are presented along with some illustrative examples. The final program is included as a useful entity.
