X-Ray Determination of the Thermal Coefficient of Expansion of Iron Nitrides,

Abstract

It is shown that the basic purpose of preliminary annealing prior to nitriding is to produce the best mechanical properties of the center, and not to remove the stressesso as to avoid deformations, which are produced mainly by the properties of the nitrided layer. Stresses in the nitrided components obviously may often be considered useful, especially in components of cylindrical shape.
