Retouching the Lenses of Large Objectives with the Aid of an Unequal Arm Laser Interferometer,

Abstract

A description of a scheme for manually retouching the lenses of large objectives using an unequal arm interferometer which contains a gas laser as a source of monochromatic light is given. The proposed technique makes it possible to perform rapid quantitative analysis of the wave aberrations of an objective after each short term retouching session. It is shown that with the aid of this technique it is possible to construct an objective operating within a small field of vision from inaccurately fabricated lenses and to correct all the errors of the objective by manually retouching only one of its surfaces.
