Calorimeter with External Heat Exchange,
Abstract
A heat-leak calorimeter for determining the heat capacity of fats is described. A 2-g. sample was placed in the inner vessel of the calorimeter and the vessel immersed into the water bath. The bath was then heated (or cooled) until the vessel and bath had different temperatures. Then the temperature of the bath was kept constant and the increasing (or decreasing) of temperature of the sample was measured over 1-3 minutes with Cu-constantan thermocouples. The temperature change of the sample during the period measured was 0.25-1.3 degrees. From this temperature change, time, and known mass of sample and heat capacity of the calorimetric vessel the heat capacity of the fat was calculated. It is possible to carry out the experiment with each sample in several minutes several times both for heating and cooling periods. (Author)
