Hailstone Extremes for Design

Abstract

To a climatologist, concerned with design criteria, hailstones offer one of the greatest challenges. The risk or probability of occurrence of hailstones is needed for the revision of MIL-STD-210A, 'Climatic Extremes for Military Equipment.' Eventually some kind of instrumentaiton, using radar or hailpads, is expected to measure the destructive power of hailstorms, but for this study, the literature had led only to tentative figures for the distribution of diameters.
