Ion-Ion Instability Induced by A.C. Electric Fields.

Abstract

The presence of low frequency a.c. fields in a plasma substantially modifies the marginal stability condition for a counterstreaming ion-ion instability and allows the system to be unstable even if the electron thermal energy is much smaller than the relative ion streaming energy. The possible role of the instability in high Mach number whistler shocks is discussed. (Author)
