Solidification of Molten Metal Spheres in Vacuum.

Abstract

Proposed drop tower experiments to study the solidification of metal drops permit only about three seconds of free fall. Selection of materials is dictated by the time to solidity, which is primarily determined by the two modes of heat removal in a vacuum: radiation and evaporation. Equations are derived to determine the time to solidify in relatively short time periods: Ca, Mg, Sr, Cr, W, and Ta. (Author)
