Coherent Combining of Angle Modulated Signals Using Phase-Lock Loops.

Abstract

The use of phase-lock loops to coherently combine angle modulated signals is investigated. emphasis is placed on determining the effect of receiver-generated noise on the performance (1) combiners in which pilot tone components of the received signals to be combined are phase-locked to a common CW reference signal and (2) combiners having a reference signal derived from the sum (combiner output) signal. When a combiner of the latter type is utilized, an arbitrary angle modulation technique can be employed. The effects of introducing hard limiters in the phase-lock loops on combiner performance are determined. Linearized combiners models are developed and conventional analysis techniques used to derive expressions relating appropriate combiner performance measures to signal and system parameters. (Author)
