Effects of Granular Content of Sulfur-Silica Capping Compound on Compressive Strength.

Abstract

Sulfur-silica compound was tested for Granular content and compressive strength of 2-in. cubes after melting up to five times and storage for periods up to 28 days. Granualr contents varied from 50.6 to 52.4 percent, and strengths varied from 4,750 to 10,900 psi. Average strength increased until approximately 7 days after melting and cooling. Strength and granular-content values were influenced by entraping over, and by solids collecting in the upper part of the melting chamber between melting periods and pouring, by capping-compound sulfur boiling over, and by solids collecting in the upper part of the melting chamber between melting periods and subsequently melting down into the pot during later melting periods.
