Laminar Flow Circulation in a Rotating Tank with a Spinning Cover

Abstract

A study has been made of axisymmetric incompressible fluid flows in a rotating tank when the angular speed of the cover changes abruptly. From the initial solid-body rotation a meridional and an azimuthal circulation relative to the moving tank develop. This problem is solved numerically by means of a stream function-vorticity formulation for the meridional flow. Local fine grids are used in the Ekman and Stewartson layers. No finite gap between tank and cover is considered. The singular behavior at this point is investigated. The parameters considered are the Temporal and spatial oscillations of the laminar flow field as well as the occurrence of cell flows are discussed.
