Development of a System for Identification of Bacteria Based on Microcolony Heat Emission and Infrared Radiation.

Abstract

The demonstration of some cellular characteristics of bacteria in their collective response as a colony has proven effective in establishing characteristic infrared interaction properties for the colonies of ten test organisms. A modified photomicorgraphic system was employed using infrared radiation for transmission and reflectance studies of the absorbancy, reflectance, luminescence and fluorescence properties of ten test organisms. Final recording was done on infrared film. Photoanalysis of the film was done on a D.B.G. spectrophotometer. Results produced distinguishing geometric and infrared properties of ten different closely related test organisms. The data obtained was quantitated into a numerical identification system. Bacteria as closely related as Streptococcus pyogenes and Streptococcus salivarius were distinguished and identified by this infrared procedure. (Author)
