Optical Pumps for Erbium Lasers.

Abstract

The purpose of this program was to produce more efficient plasma pumps for pulsed Er:YAG and Er:glass lasers. A 4mm bore, 700 Torr xenon lamp, for use with a clad erbium silicate glass laser material has been developed for 1.54 micrometers 'eye safe' range finders and target designators. The desired normal mode output of 50 mj was achieved, at 0.031% efficiency, using a 160J, 1.5 msec pulse delivered at 5 pps from a 4-section PFN. An intersecting circle cavity design, and a 3 inch length, 0.25 inch diameter clad laser rod with 0.157 inch silicate glass core was used. (Author)
