Aircraft Wake Vortex Sensing Systems

Abstract

The report summarizes and analyzes techniques, both active and passive that could be used to detect and measure air movements associated with wingtip vortex generation within an area or throughout a volume of terminal airspace. Results of preliminary feasibility tests employing available technology are presented. The report also discusses system studies devoted to the wake vortex sensing problem. The major effort is directed toward the location of wake vortex hazard, and the generation of monitoring requirements for safe operation in the airport terminal environment.
