Geography and the Properties of Surfaces. The Two Dimensional Spatial Organization of the Pecatonica River, Southwestern Wisconsin.

Abstract

The Pecatonica River, an eighth order stream with over 28,000 first order streams was analyzed. The type of mixed hexagonal hierarchy found is approximately the same as that found in Clear Creek and Old Man Creek, Iowa (seventh order) and in many other streams developed on many lithologies and under different climatic regimes in the United States. This hierarchy, with a branching ratio of about 4.5, is thought to be very common, and may well predominate in natural stream networks. (Author)
