X-Irradiation Schedules for Selected Responses in Yearst.
Abstract
Yeast cultures X-irradiated continuously during two or three cell generations compared with cultures given short-period irradiations at high dose-rate exhibited differences in division rate, cell number, cell size and viability. These differences indicate that modifications in irradiation procedures can be useful in obtaining responses selected to promote the identification of affected reactions. Continuous irradiations suppressed cell division more consistently, produced populations more uniform in size, and when appropriately terminated, allowed the cells to divide in synchrony, presumeably because an essential reaction(s) involved in division had been selectively affected.
