The Incidence of Backache Among Aircrew and Groundcrew in the Royal Air Force

Abstract

To determine the incidence of backache in Royal Air Force aircrew a questionnaire-type survey involving two thousand aircrew and groundcrew was carried out in 1969-70. Aircrew showed an incidence significantly higher than that in groundcrew. Among the aircrew group the incidence of backache in pilots was significantly higher than that in navigators and other aircrew combined. Pilots using ejector seats showed a higher incidence than those using static seats; among the latter group helicopter pilots suffer more discombort than their colleagues using other types of static seats. More than half of the pilots who experience frequent in-flight backache or pain never suffer from backache on the ground.
