Engineering Survey for Installation of a Halon 1301 System at Naval Damage Control Training Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,

Abstract

An engineering survey for installation of a Halon 1301 system in a simulated ship engine room was performed. Based on this survey a system specification was prepared, and an engineered system was designed to meet the requirement. The system is designed to provide a 6% vapor concentration with an 8 second discharge time. However, the proposed design offers flexibility in modifying both the discharge time and/or the vapor concentration without the procurement of additional hardware. The survey can conclude that a halon vapor concentration of 4.0% will provide extinguishment. However, there is no industry acceptance or a standard for the inerting requirement. (Author)
