An Empirical Approach to Variable Safety Levels for Army Overseas Theatres.

Abstract

The report describes empirical studies of demands placed on Army overseas inventory control centers by their customers and a methodology developed for constructing variable (statistical) safety level (VSL) tables suitable for use by ICCs. The methodology considers variability in both demands and in the overseas order and ship (replenishment) times. Relationships are developed for forecasting demands variability, measured in terms of percent error, based on item characteristics. VSL Tables are constructed for the Korean and European Theaters.
