The Development of the U. S. Army Chemical Information and Data System.

Abstract

The initiation of an Army project for the development of a chemical information and data system is briefed as background. The development of a computerized system for the storage and retrieval of textual and structural information on chemical compounds is traced through the initial requirements determination to its evolution into a pilot system which operates as a real-time timeshared, multiterminal remote console system, with graphic printout of structural formulas. The development of a cathode ray tube with light pen for query input and display of structural formulas of retrieved compounds, the adaptation of a topological screen, and the construction of indexes to permit search of the compound chemical abstracts service registry file are summarized.
